Co to oznacza?
When an infection of dental origin passes through bone into soft tissue, the swelling becomes visible from outside. That means it is no longer confined inside the mouth; the direction and speed of spread are what matter.
Swelling rising towards the eye or descending into the neck carries a separate urgency. Difficulty swallowing, breathlessness and being unable to open the mouth are signs the airway is starting to be involved.
There are two usual dental causes of facial swelling; in both, treatment is directed at the source of the infection.
Możliwe przyczyny
Co pomaga w domu?
- Do not apply heat to the swollen area; heat speeds the spread
- A cold compress from outside eases it but does not replace treatment
- Do not try to burst or drain the swelling yourself
- Swelling spreading under the eye or into the neck
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing: go to the nearest emergency department
- Fever, shivering or feeling generally unwell
- Being unable to open your mouth two fingers wide
Frequently asked questions
- The swelling went down; should I still go?
- Yes. A drop in swelling usually means the pus has drained, not that the source has healed. Untouched, it recurs.
- Is taking an antibiotic enough?
- No. An antibiotic slows the spread but does not reach the infected tissue. The source has to be cleaned.
