Mouth & Jaw

A mouth that is constantly dry

Dryness is not merely uncomfortable; it raises the risk of decay and gum disease together.

Hva betyr dette?

Saliva is the mouth's natural protection: it buffers acid, delivers minerals to the enamel, clears debris and carries antibacterial proteins. When the volume drops, all of those weaken at once.

In a dry mouth, therefore, decay advances faster, gums inflame more easily, dentures do not seat well and odour becomes pronounced. Dryness should be treated as a risk multiplier rather than a complaint on its own.

The most common cause is medication. Systemic conditions and mouth breathing are the other usual settings.

Mulige årsaker

Hva hjelper hjemme?

  • Drink water through the day; limit coffee and alcohol
  • Sugar-free gum stimulates saliva flow
  • Avoid alcohol-based rinses; they increase the dryness
  • Switch to a fluoride toothpaste and shorten your check-up interval
Når du ikke skal vente
  • Swelling or pain in the salivary glands
  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking
  • Several new cavities within months
  • Burning in the mouth or a non-healing sore

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop my medication?
Do not stop it on your own. The dose or an alternative is discussed with the prescribing doctor, while protection inside the mouth is increased.
Isn't drinking water enough?
It gives relief but does not replace saliva; water neither buffers acid nor delivers minerals to the enamel.
