Stained teeth: whitening or veneers?

For teeth that have darkened, two routes come to mind: whitening the tooth or covering its front with a veneer. Which one works depends on whether the stain is on the surface of the tooth or inside it.

Where the stain sits

Stains left by coffee, tea, red wine and smoking are mostly on the surface of the tooth. With age, enamel thins and the yellowish dentine beneath shows through more. Other discolouration lies inside the tooth: grey-brown bands linked to certain antibiotics taken in childhood, marks from too much fluoride, or a single tooth that has darkened after a knock.

When whitening is enough

Some surface staining goes with professional cleaning alone. For the yellowing that remains, whitening lightens the colour without cutting natural enamel. The result is not permanent. It fades over time depending on diet and smoking, and it can be topped up. Whitening only affects natural tooth: fillings, crowns and veneers do not change colour.

When veneers come up

With deep internal discolouration, whitening may achieve little or leave a banded look. If the shape, length or small gaps are to change along with the colour, a veneer addresses both together. For this a thin layer of enamel is usually removed, and that cannot be undone. Very dark teeth need a more opaque ceramic to cover the colour.

The order of treatment and options in between

In most plans cleaning and whitening come first, the result is left to settle for a few weeks, and only then are veneers or fillings discussed for what is still missing. This way fewer teeth are covered and the shade of new restorations is chosen to match the lightened teeth. For a single tooth that has darkened after root canal treatment, whitening from inside the tooth is a separate option.

Frequently asked questions

Does whitening remove every stain?

No. It works on surface stains and age-related yellowing. With deep discolouration inside the tooth the result may be limited.

Does whitening damage teeth?

Used under a dentist's supervision and for the advised time, it does not cut the enamel. Temporary sensitivity is common and usually passes within a few days.

Should I whiten before having veneers?

In most cases yes. Once the natural teeth are lighter, the number of teeth that need covering is reassessed and the veneer shade is chosen to match.

Will my fillings and crowns whiten?

No. Whitening gels act only on natural tooth. Old fillings in the visible area may need to be renewed afterwards.

How is a single dark tooth lightened?

If a root-treated tooth has darkened, it can be lightened by placing the whitening agent inside the tooth. If that is not enough, a veneer or crown is considered.
