What a home whitening kit does and does not do
Nearly every kit relies on the same active ingredient: peroxide. The gel works its way into the enamel and the layer beneath it, breaks down the coloured molecules held inside the tooth, and the shade lifts by a few steps. Surface marks are not wiped away; what changes is the tooth's own colour. Tartar, a filling that has yellowed and a brown scratch on the enamel all stay exactly as they are.
Two things decide the result: how much peroxide is in the gel and how long it stays on the tooth. A low-strength gel worn for a few hours a day can land close to a strong gel worn briefly. That is usually why two people using the same box get different results: one wears the tray for half an hour, the other sleeps in it.
Carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide
One of two names is printed on the box. Hydrogen peroxide acts directly and works fast. Carbamide peroxide breaks down slowly in the mouth into hydrogen peroxide and urea, which is why it turns up in gels meant to be worn for long stretches, often overnight. The two percentages cannot be compared side by side.
- 10% carbamide peroxide comes to roughly 3.5% hydrogen peroxide, so a bigger number on the box does not mean a stronger gel.
- Hydrogen peroxide gels are made for short applications, carbamide peroxide gels for long contact.
- Wearing the same gel twice as long changes both the result and the sensitivity, so never stretch the time on your own.
- If the box gives no percentage, there is no way to know how much peroxide reaches your teeth.
Ready-made trays leak onto the gums
Most kits contain one tray shape expected to suit everyone. The types you soften in hot water and bite into sit a little better, but they do not stop at the gum margin. Squeeze in too much gel, or leave the tray loose, and peroxide spreads onto the gum; the area turns white within minutes, stings and can stay tender for a day or two. A tray a dentist makes from an impression holds the gel against the tooth and ends short of the gum.
Fillings, veneers and crowns do not lighten
Peroxide only reaches the tooth's own tissue. A composite filling, a porcelain veneer, a crown and a bridge are the same colour on the last day of the kit as on the first. Finish a course with a large filling or a veneer on a front tooth and the natural teeth around it have lightened while that piece has not, so the result looks patchy. White marks on the enamel can also stand out more in the early days. A single tooth darkened from the inside after root canal treatment will not be brought into line by a tray kit either.
Whitening lifts the colour of a tooth; it does not treat decay, a filling or the gums.
Sensitivity is to be expected
A good share of people get a short, sharp twinge with cold, and the gum margin can feel tender for a while as well. This usually settles within a few days of stopping the gel. Leaving the gel on longer than the box says speeds nothing up, it only adds to the twinges. When the discomfort builds, taking a break, dropping to every other day or moving to a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth are the usual answers.
What to check before starting a kit
If there is untreated decay, a broken filling or an exposed root, the gel reaches the inside of the tooth and causes sharp pain, so those need sorting out first. Bleeding, swollen gums are another reason to wait. Countries set different limits on peroxide strength and anything above a set percentage is supplied only through a dentist, so the figure printed on a box bought online is not always reliable. In pregnancy and while breastfeeding, whitening is usually postponed.

How many shades will a home kit lift?
That varies from person to person. Teeth that have yellowed with age respond well to peroxide, while grey tones and teeth darkened from the inside shift less. Starting colour, gel strength and wear time work together, so the outcome pictured on a box is not what everyone gets.
Whitening strips or a tray kit?
Strips stick to the front surface and are simple to use, but they do not reach between the teeth or into crowded corners. Tray kits cover the whole surface, though a loose ready-made tray lets gel onto the gums. Which one suits you depends on how your teeth are lined up.
Does whitening gel damage enamel?
Used at the strength and for the time given on the box, lasting damage to enamel is not expected. Trouble comes from stretching the wear time, repeating the gel several times a day and ignoring decay already in the mouth. If sharp pain starts during a course, stop and have the teeth checked.
How long does the effect last?
The shade drifts back over time. Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking shorten the run. Most people see a visible return within months and hold the colour with short top-ups now and then. No fixed figure holds for everyone, because habits decide most of it.
Will a home kit lighten a dark root-treated tooth?
Usually not. In that tooth the discolouration comes from inside rather than from the surface, so a tray kit lightens the neighbours and leaves the dark one standing out more. A different technique, worked from inside the tooth, is what comes up in that situation, and a dentist decides on it.
What happens if whitening gel is swallowed?
A small amount squeezed out of the tray and swallowed usually causes nausea or mild discomfort that passes on its own. Keep kits well out of reach of children; if a child swallows the gel, seek dental or medical care the same day.
