Zirconia or laminate veneer? A decision tree

Most smile design consultations open with the same question: “Should I have zirconia or laminates?” The answer depends far less on taste than on the current condition of your teeth.

The core difference: how much tooth is removed

A laminate veneer is a thin porcelain shell bonded after removing just 0.3–0.7 mm from the front surface. A zirconia crown wraps the tooth entirely, which requires reducing 1–1.5 mm from every face. Laminates are conservative; zirconia is restorative.

Laminate veneers are the right call when

  • Your teeth are structurally sound, with no large fillings or root canal history
  • The issue is colour, minor shape irregularities or gaps between teeth
  • Your bite is even and there is no significant crowding
  • Preserving as much natural tooth as possible is your priority

Zirconia takes over when

  • There is substantial tooth loss, large old fillings or a fracture
  • The tooth has had root canal treatment and become brittle
  • A bridge is planned or a crown is needed over an implant
  • You grind your teeth and durability outweighs minimal preparation

Is it reversible?

Both are permanent. Removed enamel does not grow back. That is why we recommend asking for a mock-up before you decide: a temporary trial that lets you see the new smile in your own mouth before anything is cut.
