Oral Diagnosis and Radiology

What is oral cancer?

Oral cancer refers to cancer that develops in the tissues of the mouth, including the lips, tongue, gums, and cheeks. It can also occur in the oropharynx, which includes the back of the mouth and the base of the tongue. Risk factors for oral cancer include tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, and HPV infection.

Symptoms of oral cancer can include persistent sores, lumps or thickening in the oral tissue, unexplained bleeding, and changes in the way the teeth fit together when the mouth is closed. Treatment options for oral cancer may include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Early detection is important for increasing the chances of successful treatment.

What causes oral cancer?

Oral cancer is caused by the abnormal growth of cells in the oral cavity, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, and sinuses. The primary cause of oral cancer is exposure to the carcinogens found in tobacco and alcohol. Other risk factors include excessive sun exposure, poor oral hygiene, HPV infection, and a diet low in fruits and vegetables.

How Do You Detect Mouth Cancer Diagnosis?

Oral cancer can be detected through a variety of methods. The most common method is a visual examination of the oral cavity, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat, performed by a dentist or doctor.

This examination may be complemented by palpation, or feeling the tissues for lumps or abnormalities. In addition, a biopsy may be taken of any suspicious tissue to confirm the diagnosis. Imaging tests such as x-rays, CT scans or MRI may also be used to help detect and stage the cancer. It's important to note that early detection is key in treating oral cancer, and regular check-ups and self-examination can help identify any potential issues early on.

How Is Oral Ulcers Differential Diagnosis?

Oral ulcers can have a wide range of causes, and the differential diagnosis will depend on the specific characteristics of the ulcer, as well as the patient's medical history and symptoms. Some common causes of oral ulcers include:

Canker sores (aphthous ulcers): These are small, round ulcers that typically appear inside the lips, cheeks, or on the tongue. They are benign and not contagious.

Trauma: Ulcers can also be caused by physical trauma to the oral cavity, such as biting the cheek or tongue.

Infections: Bacterial, fungal, and viral infections can all cause oral ulcers. Immune-mediated disorders: Certain autoimmune conditions, such as Behcet's disease and pemphigus vulgaris, can cause oral ulcers.

Neoplastic : Some oral cancer can present as an ulcer Nutritional deficiencies: A lack of certain nutrients, such as vitamin B12 or iron, can cause oral ulcers.

Medications: Certain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and chemotherapy drugs, can cause oral ulcers as a side effect. It is important to consult with a dentist or doctor to determine the cause of oral ulcers and to rule out any serious or underlying conditions. They may recommend additional tests such as blood tests, a biopsy, or imaging tests to help identify the cause.

What Is Oral Thrush?

Oral ulcers can have a wide range of causes, and the differential diagnosis will depend on the specific characteristics of the ulcer, as well as the patient's medical history and symptoms. Some common causes of oral ulcers include:

Canker sores (aphthous ulcers): These are small, round ulcers that typically appear inside the lips, cheeks, or on the tongue. They are benign and not contagious.

It is important to consult with a dentist or doctor to determine the cause of oral ulcers and to rule out any serious or underlying conditions. They may recommend additional tests such as blood tests, a biopsy, or imaging tests to help identify the cause.

How Is Oral Thrush Diagnosed?

Oral thrush, also known as oral candidiasis, is an infection of the mouth caused by a type of fungus called Candida. The most common type of Candida that causes oral thrush is Candida albicans.

Symptoms of oral thrush include: white, creamy-looking patches on the tongue, inner cheeks, gums, and sometimes on the roof of the mouth and tonsils redness and soreness in the affected areas difficulty swallowing loss of taste cracked corners of the mouth People with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or cancer, are at a higher risk of developing oral thrush.

Other risk factors include taking certain medications, such as antibiotics or inhaled corticosteroids, having dentures, and having a dry mouth. Oral thrush is typically treated with antifungal medication, which can be applied topically or taken orally. It's important to follow the instructions of a healthcare professional when using antifungal medication. Additionally, maintain good oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing regularly, and avoiding sugary and acidic foods can help prevent thrush from recurring.

What Is Tongue Cancer and How Is Tongue Cancer Diagnosed?

Tongue cancer, also known as oral tongue cancer, is a type of cancer that develops in the cells of the tongue. It can occur on the front or back of the tongue, and can spread to other parts of the oral cavity and head and neck region. Symptoms of tongue cancer include a persistent sore or lump on the tongue, difficulty speaking or swallowing, pain or numbness in the tongue, and a change in the way the tongue looks or feels.

Diagnosis of tongue cancer typically begins with a physical examination of the oral cavity, including the tongue, by a dentist or doctor. They may also perform a biopsy, which involves removing a small piece of tissue from the suspicious area and examining it under a microscope.

Imaging tests such as x-rays, CT scans, or MRI may also be used to help determine the size and location of the tumor, and to check if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Other diagnostic tests, such as blood tests, may also be performed to check for cancer markers in the blood. It's important to note that early detection is key in treating tongue cancer, and regular check-ups and self-examination can help identify any potential issues early on.

How Is Periodontal Disease Diagnosed?

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a condition that affects the gums and other supporting structures of the teeth. It is caused by the buildup of plaque and bacteria on the teeth and gums. Diagnosis of periodontal disease typically begins with a comprehensive oral examination by a dentist or periodontist. During the examination, the dentist will check for signs of gum inflammation, such as redness, swelling, and bleeding.

They may also measure the depth of the spaces (called "pockets") between the gums and teeth, as deep pockets can indicate advanced periodontal disease. The dentist may also take x-rays to check for bone loss or other signs of periodontal disease that are not visible during a visual examination. Other diagnostic tests, such as measuring the amount of plaque and bacteria in the mouth, measuring the amount of bleeding while probing the gums, or measuring the roughness of the tooth's surface, may also be used to help diagnose periodontal disease. It's important to note that periodontal disease is a chronic condition that can progress over time, so regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings are important for early detection and treatment.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is the process of determining the cause of a medical condition or disease through examination, testing, and observation. Treatment refers to the management and care of a patient's condition or disease, which may include medication, therapy, surgery, or lifestyle changes. The specific diagnosis and treatment plan will depend on the individual case and the condition or disease being treated. It's important to consult a qualified medical professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Successful
I had an unfortunate fight with my Airbnb host over some accommodation issues and my teeth got damaged, I went to Papatya for a check-up for my front teeth. They were so calming and helpful. Lucky me they had their orthodontist working on that day so they fitted me in. My front two teeth were swinging a bit and Dr. Hasan did an amazing job just in about 30 mins. He told me to go for a check-up after two weeks since I was going back home. I went for a check-up back in home and everything went fine. Thanks to Dr. Hasan my front teeth are still healthy. They have an amazing staff, Thank you Papatya you’re a lifesaver.

I had some teeth problems regarding fillings, veneers and implants. Papatya is a life saver, the implants installing process wasn’t hard at all, it took less than 1 hour for 3 implants, I came back after two months after the implant was done, zirconia crowns are the best materials and they suggested it for me. I’m so happy with my smile makeover, thank you Papatya for making me smile again.

I have chosen PAPATYA Dental Hospital
After long time on Google search, and talking to a lot of people, I have decided on PAPATYA Dental Hospital, in Antalya.
I have chosen PAPATYA Dental Hospital. Already from day one I was started feeling relaxed from the welcoming from the lobby young people, Merve the beautiful young Lady and the handsome young Man Emre. The travel coordinators/translators, Bazi and Toga and the hospitals driver's. The implantation doctor, Dr.Ahmet Göktaş, I do hope that is the correct spelling. He is kind and friendly and above all very good in what he does. The Young dentist have treated me Yesterday, was very gentle and kind. I will find out about he's name on Tuesday when he will work on me again. Not to forget their supervisor, he's just fine person. I don't recall the name but I will correct my report in an other time, I am sure. OK, take good care of yourselves everyone. Keep Healthy in order to be able to help more people coming to your way.
